It is challenging to begin, let alone complete a large canvas! This three-day acrylic workshop is designed to help you get past the "I hate this painting" stage (which usually kicks in after about a day) when you might be tempted to start over or shove the painting in a closet. You will learn how to bring the canvas through several layers, working with colour, composition, and surface and surprise yourself by what you can achieve after three consecutive days on the same painting!
You may bring your own image as a starting point for the painting or work from ideas provided by workshop material. The aim is to stray from strict realism into the semi-abstract or abstract.
Students provide their own supplies as well as their own canvas (choose any dimension between 20x30 to 36x36).

About Alison Watt: Alison grew up in Victoria and now lives on Protection Island, Nanaimo, BC, she has a BSc in Biology and an MFA in Creative Writing. She is a painter who writes; and a writer who paints. Alison’s work focuses on still lives, landscapes, portraits and abstracts in watercolour and acrylic.
Originally a biologist, she worked on seabird colonies, in the Amazon, and in a botanical garden; led ecotours in Honduras, the Galapagos, and (under sail), in the Pacific Northwest in the Gulf Islands, the Great Bear Rainforest, Haida Gwaii, and Alaska. In 2008/2009 Alison and her husband sailed their boat to French Polynesia. During that year she kept a travel blog illustrated with sketches and paintings.
Alison paints and shows her acrylic and watercolour paintings in her garden studio on Protection Island, near Nanaimo, B.C. She has shown her paintings with the Cedar Coast Group of west coast artists, and was featured in the award-winning book, Carmanah – Artistic Visions of an Ancient Rainforest. Alison is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and has participated in many invitational shows as a botanical artist, including at the University of British Columbia, Hycroft Manor, and the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboretae.
Her paintings have received awards at the Sidney Fine Art Show, and more recently at the Federation of Canadian Artists Juried shows in Nanaimo (fall 2009, summer 2010, and summer 2011).
