Clayoquot Writers Group
The Clayoquot Writers Group (CWG) began in the early '90s as a gathering of writers and poets who met regularly to exchange writing and to support and encourage one another. All of the members have at one time lived in and around Tofino or Ucluelet. Their eclectic experiences on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island have provided much material for writing. Over the decades CWG has evolved with technology.
At present, there are sixteen members, four of whom live "away" and are considered as alumni members. CWG members come from different walks of life and include a lighthouse keeper, a council member, and two float house dwellers. One member currently lives in Toronto. Among the CWG are writers who compose fiction, non-fiction, poems, screenplays, and scripts. Some members have been published in magazines, newspapers, memoirs, novels, anthologies, and textbooks. Some have self-published their writing in chapbooks.
The main goal of CWG is to nurture members by providing a supportive environment for creativity and networking. As well, part of the CWG mandate is to bring writing to the local community through organized events. CWG has held many writing workshops and literary events. At meetings members have benefitted by discussing their writing and reviewing works-in-progress. Currently, much discussion happens through the CWG email network.
